Description
Collector Leonard McKay writes, "This painting was displayed in the second year of the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal and the rebuilding of San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and fire. This is one of Andrew Hill's finest paintings. California Redwood Park was later renamed Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Hill led the fight to save the redwoods and was one of the most important early conservationists. Standing at the base of the redwood tree are the female members of the McPherson family and seated to the right is Carrie Stephens Walter, who worked alongside Hill in the successful effort to acquire Big Basin. The McPherson family owned the Santa Cruz Sentinal and were influentual in the drive to save the redwoods. For more information on Hill, read Carolyn de Vries excellent book 'Grand and Ancient Forest.'"
