Text on plaque: "Here on December 4, 1774, Captain Fernando Rivera Moncado, Military commander of California, left his soldiers and with Francisco Palou, chaplain, pushed northward to Point Lobos. These were the first white men to climb this eminence and view the Golden Gate at close range.
