Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (silent): Milpitas Frontier Days, including horse riders in western gear lining up with their horses, children in cowboy hats, horses, Milpitas Art Show, people looking at paintings, a plein air painter. Story reads, "The Annual Milpitas Frontier Days celebration drew to a close tonight following three days of western-type excitement. Featured attraction this afternoon was a horse show. Youngsters from the Milpitas area brought their steeds to an improvised rodeo grounds just off Old Oakland Highway. There they competed in several contests. Riders were judged on their skill, plus that of the horses. In contrast to the horse show, Frontier Days also featured an art show. Several hundred works by prominent area artists were on display. According to art show organizer Don Durham, its purpose is to stimulate art appreciation in the Milpitas area. The show presented not only finished paintings, but demonstrations nd explanations by several of the artists whose works were on exhibit. Attendance at such affairs was reduced by unseasonably cool temperature -- especially late this afternoon -- but there are promises of fewer clouds and warmer temperatures in sight." Segment 2 (silent): Sign for the Ave Maria Convent and Convalescent Home, followed by two nuns. One of the nuns is holding a hummingbird and feeding it with an eye dropper. The bird is then placed inside a box with a flower and camera focuses on bird flapping its wings. Script reads, "Normally the patients at the Ave Maria Convalescent Home in Monterey arrive on foot but yesterday one flew in. A baby hummingbird, only 3 inches in length, alighted in the patio, almost too weak to fly and unable to feed itself. Sister Louise and Mother Margaret took it upon themselves to nurse their new patient back to good health. Several times every day they feed it honey through an eye dropper. The Sisters have put two flowers in a box in an endeavor to get their patient to feed himself, but he seems to prefer the bottle!! He is almost back to good health and it would appear that the patient will be it for release very shortly. But until he is back on his own two feet again he continues to receive the loving care at the Ave Maria Convalescent Home." Segment 3 (silent): Outdoor dog show, with may shots of dogs, their owners, and the trophy. Script reads, "Today was the day when the beauty of famed Pebble Beach really went to the doge -- the Del Monte Dog Show, that is!! The green lawns around the Lodge were today given over to some 1600 specimens of man's best friend as they vied in competition with one another in the judging rings. From early this morning crowds thronged into Pebble Beach for this only Blue Ribbon Dog Show of the West coast. Dogs of all shapes and sizes queried each other's presence but soon tails were wagging in friendship. Judging in the rings went on all day at a steady pace as proud owners paraded their dogs up and down. One of the silver award trophies reflected the general scene of canine activity to the wild cacophony of canine approval. Boxers, beagles, bassets, bulldogs, bedlingtons and bostons kept company with such geographical species as Italian Greyhounds, Australian Terriers, German Pointers, Japanese Spaniels, and Tyrolian St. Bernards. The dog's day out -- the Del Monte Kennel Show." 5/29/66 A-D 485
