Tom Nagano poses in front of "Can of Cardines", a 10' x 20' mural painted by Sandy Bleifer located at the Hayvenhurst Ave. underpass of Rt. 101 in Encino. Nagano is posed in such a way that it appears he's opening a sardine can full of smashed cars. Artist Sandy Bleifer painted this mural in 1975 and was assisted by Zachary Sharp and Anthony Lomax. Ms. Bleifer studied art and classical music at the University of California, Los Angeles and for many years has been active as an artist-in-residence in local schools, and is the co-author of teaching materials on art appreciation. U.S. Route 101, known as the Hollywood Freeway, and also referred to as "The 101" by local residents, is a heavily traveled commuter route serving the west side of the greater Los Angeles area. It travels west from Downtown L.A. through the Cahuenga pass before turning west onto the Ventura Freeway.
