Article by Charles Handy on the benefit of certain books to managers that will enable them to run organizations more effectively by allowing them to shift their focus to other important aspects of life. Handy begins the article discussing his experience writing his first book on organizations in the Provence region of France, and how the summer house loaned to him had a large library which contained literary works that had more to say on the human condition, and the ways of organizations, than all the books he brought with him to study. He goes on to state that managers need such books to aid in thinking, in addition to plays, films, and works of art. Handy spends the remainder of the article discussing how this particular column will, on a monthly basis, feature his thought on pieces of literature, film, exhibitions, or other types of events which merit attention due to their implications for management responsibilities. He then lists Homer’s Odyssey, Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom, the paintings of Johannes Vermeer, management works by Mary Parker Follett, and the novel, Primary Colors, as suggestions for consideration and contemplation.
