Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated April 22, 1950 partially reads, "Don Gockel, of 2328 N. Orchard Dr., in Burbank, has a 100-year-old letter which describes in detail how his grandmother's brother met death attempting to cross a swirling river on his way to Golden California. The letter was written by Thomas Tompson, a member of a small group of men who left 'from the edge of the swamp near St. Joseph, Mo.,' on June 6, 1840--Gold Rush bound...The letter has been handed down, first to Mrs. Rebecca Cogely Gockel, then to her daughter and finally to her grandson, Don Gockel. The date of the letter reads: 'Sacramento City, Calif. April 7th, 1850."
