Photograph caption dated February 15, 1960 reads, "Teacher and attorneys--Valley high school teacher Oren Bornstein, center, discusses charges against him with attorneys Morton M. Weinberg, left, and David R. Glickman. Bornstein is accused of heading ring of juvenile robbers". A preliminary hearing began in the Van Nuys Municipal Court for Oren Bornstein, a former teacher at John Francis Polytechnic High School, who was charged with receiving stolen goods and soliciting one of his students to assault and rob a jewelry salesman. Bornstein later pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to six months in the Los Angeles County Jail and four years probation.
