Description
Image of a certificate memorializing a visit to the United States Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; image of four allegorical goddess figures reclining at center with symbols of American progress around and behind them, including a union shield, sheaves of grain, a plow and scythe, fruit, mechanical cogs, a caduceus, factories, and ships; images of the Main Building and Memorial Hall at top right and left corners; portraits of Presidents George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant flank the seal of the Centennial Certificate Bureau of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that depicts a bald eagle standing on a shield of stars and stripes; signatures of Pennsylvania governor John F. Hartranft, mayor of Philadelphia William S. Stokley, and President Ulysses S. Grant.
"Designed & engraved by The Major & Knapp Co. N.Y. and issued from the presses of R. Hoe & Co. at the International Exhibition."--text, bottom right margin. "In Commemoration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America. and in illustration of their progress in the Arts and Sciences, in Wealth and Material resources and of their success in the practical Free Republican Government. Esto Perpetua! This is to certify that Henry F Kellogg a resident of Lynn, Mass. was a visitor at the International Exhibition held at Philadelphia, Pa, in 1876, and that his name has been duly enrolled at the Centennial Certificate Bureau in the City of Philadelphia. Given under our hand at Philadelphia, PA. on the Sixth day of July, One thousand eight hundred and seventy six."--text, portions of certificate, handwritten and printed.
