Description
Description accompanying photo states: "The city was safe from inundation in the big Christmas week storm of 1956, but on November 19, 1950 the American River overflowed its banks and forced 430 suburban families out of their homes. Thousands of acres in the vicinity of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Fulton Avenue and Del Paso Heights were under water. It was the heaviest rain storm in 20 years, with six consecutive day of rain and melting snow in the Sierra. The American River at H Street, pictured here, hit a record high of 44.30 feet at the bridge."
