Whittier turned out en masse to cheer its favorite native son on July 29, 1952. More than 25,000 persons lined the city streets and another 15,000 packed Whittier College's Hadley Stadium. Every grandstand seat at the stadium was taken and there was no standing room on the playing field. One spectator held up a broom--a broom to clean up the "Washington mess."
