Description
Image of American actor Robert Downing, in costume as the gladiator Spartacus, standing with a sword and shield and his foot on an opponent surrounded by fallen gladiators with spectators in the stands behind him; the poster advertises the tragedy "The Gladiator"; fragment of a date sheet for a February 21-22 show, pasted to bottom of image.
Probable date approximated by cataloger based on use of phrase "Elite Tragic Event!" in newspaper advertisements for the play in 1887 and 1888; Mack secured rights for the play in 1886. "W J Morgan & Co / Lith. Cleveland, O."--text, bottom left. "Under the Management / of / Mr. Jos. H. Mack"--text, bottom right. "The Elite Tragic Event! ... Feb 21 and 22"--text, fragment of date sheet.
