View of United Methodist Church of Rancho Cucamonga located at 7690 Archibald Ave. in the city of Rancho Cucamonga. Photo shows a strong, large stone structure with a square tower on the left, several large windows, and steps leading up to the main entrance. The "Old Stone Church" of Cucamonga, as it is referred to, was built from 1907 to 1909 out of native stone from the foothills in Cucamonga Canyon, at a cost of approximately $7,000. All walls were reinforced with wire and cement as the stones were individually fitted in, and all windows are stained glass. The church was finished and dedicated on June 6, 1909. The United Methodist Church is the largest Methodist denomination, having both mainline and evangelical elements. It is organized into conferences; the highest level is called the General Conference and it is the only organization that may speak officially for the church. The United Methodist Church (UMC) operates in the evangelical tradition, but is primarily a Protestant denomination that seeks to create disciples for Christ through outreach, evangelism, and through seeking holiness through the process of sanctification. UMC has a worldwide membership of approximately 12 million members: 8.1 million in the United States, and 3.5 million in Africa, Asia and Europe - with the largest growth in membership occurring in Africa and the Philippines. Photo dated January 1981.
