Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Suzie Sarian was born October 20th, 1933 in Aleppo and immigrated to the United States in 1952 from Syria to go to college—LA City College and then UCLA. Suzie married George Phillips in 1953 and they had two children, Albert and Gary, by 1958. Suzie was a member of the United Armenian Congregational Church at the time of her donation to Shades of LA in 1995.; George Phillips (Philipbosian)'s family immigrated from Turkey to the New York in 1912 before moving to Philadelphia and finally Los Angeles by the 1920s. George was born in abt 1928 at Hollywood Presbytarian and attended to Los Angeles High School and UCLA Law. George's family owned Phillips Clothing Store near Hancock Park, where there was a large Armenian community at the time. Osanna with her son, George, and her grandchildren, Robert and Linda. Osanna's family came to the United States from Turkey in 1912.
