Description
Poised for a shot in circa 1935 is “Sacramento Bee” photographer Robert Handsaker. Handsaker, who eventually became chief of the Bee’s photography department, served the paper for 41 years. The Tacoma, Washington, native was noted for seeking aerial shots for many of the stories he was assigned to. He utilized this technique to cover “Operation Haylift,” the United States Air Force’s effort to deliver food to isolated herds of cattle in Nevada during the winter of 1948/49, in addition to covering the record snow falls that California received in 1952. He died in 1989.
