Description
Photograph of refugees gathered in front of the Dewey Monument in San Francisco's Union Square after the earthquake, April 18. 1906. The stone base of the monument is at center and dozens of men and women are gathered around it. The men are wearing dark suits, while the women are wearing dresses. Many are seated on wooded benches, and many barrels and crates can be seen. The tall frame of a building under construction is visible at left.
The base of the monument reads as follows: "Erected by the citizens of San Francisco to commemorate the victory of the American Navy under Commodore George Dewey at Manila Bay May First MDCCCXCV Secretary of the Navy John D.
