Description
Photograph of Southern Pacific Railroad locomotive number twenty, ca.1895. At center, a snub locomotive car appears to be a steam engine enclosed into a caboose. The car is open-air and a large boiler is visible through the windows of the exterior. The engine was shipped around the Horn for use in construction work on the S.P. Railroad and later used in Los Angeles yards up to 1885. Built for the Southern California Motor Road running from San Bernardino to Colton. The frame was built around a steam dummy so as not to frighten horses on the road. Purchased by Southern Pacific in 1900 and used about the yards.
