Description
Three-quarters length portrait. "The property of James [words illegible], Room #27 - Wells Fargo & Co bldg., San Francisco, Cala" -- handwritten on verso.
1990-1654.
Born in Franklin County, Missouri, in 1820. Arrived in California in 1850, mining and running general store. In 1859, discovered silver in Utah. Became powerful rancher and miner in West, owning large tracts of land and numerous mines. Served as United States Senator from 1887 to 1891. Died in 1891.
