Tinted lantern slide of a donkey grinding corn. The donkey is blind-folded, and walks in a circle, pulling a large stone attached to a wooden shaft that grinds the corn by crushing it onto another stone platform. This traditional way of grinding corn is practised into the twenty-first century. The slide was developed by the Photo Department, Tientsin Hui Wen Academy, Tientsin, China. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
