Description
This photo shows the Cocoanut Grove nightclub entrance on one side of the Ambassador Hotel. Designed by renowned architect Myron Hunt, it opened its doors in 1921. The massive 500-room hotel occupied 23.7 acres at 3400 Wilshire Boulevard, bordered by Wilshire, 8th, Catalina, and nearly to Mariposa. Its doors were finally closed after 68 years of service in 1989, selling for $64 million. Slated for demolition and surrounded by a chain-link fence, the landmark hotel was leveled between late 2005 and early 2006. Photo dated: November 2, 2005.
