Death took famed writer Theodore Dreiser December 29, 1945. One of the notable writers of the East, he had taken a leading role in the League of American Writers and joined the Communist Party in the 1930s, along with many others. In 1940 he participated in a debate concerning the role of Hitler held at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and chaired by leftist and later blacklisted writer Lester Cole.
