Description
An accomplished bacteriologist, botanist and avid conservationist, Beatrice has been nationally recognized for her work in influenza, poliomyelitis, and encephalomyelitis. Daughter of Marin's beloved Doctor Henry Orton Howitt who practiced in Marin for over 60 years (1893-1953), Beatrice describes her father's practice, her childhood in San Rafael, her own interest in science and in the California Native Plant Society. She is the author of two books: Vascular Plants of Monterey County, and Wild Flowers of the Monterey Area. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
