Description
Fruit grown in the Santa Clara Valley were packed and distributed all over the world. This label for a box of dried prunes packed by the California Prune and Apricot Growers Association was made for sale in France. The California Prune & Apricot Growers Association was formed in March 1917 for the purpose of creating stable prices and protecting the orchardist of California. In 1918 the Association built its headquarters at the intersection of Market and San Antonio Streets in San Jose, California. The operation of the Association continued over the years with varying degree of cooperation among the growers. During the years of the Great Depression the Association persistently advocated standards of product quality and measures to achieve market stability. Eventually the Association chose the name Sunsweet as its trademark. In May 1958 the Directors chose a new name for the Association - Sunsweet Growers, Inc.
