Description
Portrait of Thomas E. Rowan, born in New York State in 1842. Came to San Francisco with his parents in 1858 and to Los Angeles in 1860. Here his father opened the American Bakery. Thomas obtained a position with I. W. Hellman, who had a general merchandise store on the corner of Commercial and Main Streets, where the Farmers & Merchants National Bank stood so long. Entered the Pacific Union Express, later its head, which suspended and was taken over by the Wells, Fargo & Co. Express. He then went into the Hellmans' bank serving there until elected to public office, filling several different ones, including Mayor of Los Angeles from 1892-1894. He died on March 25, 1901.
