View of the rooftop of a conservatory on the grounds of the Piru Mansion (seen in the background), in the community of Piru, Ventura County, California. Hills of the surrounding Santa Clara River Valley are in the background.
"Conservatory." (Cook ranch at Piru) - handwritten caption under same photograph in "Hazard-Dyson photograph album" (call no. 094/171), UCLA Special Collections. Title devised by cataloger; date range approximated by cataloger based on the year that film negatives came into use and the latest known dates indicated for other Hazard images in the Huntington's collection. This house was built in 1890 by David C. Cook and is now known as the Newhall Mansion after its purchase by Scott and Ruth Newhall. It has also been called the Piru Mansion or Cook Mansion. (Source: Newhall Mansion web site.) Condition note: White "flaring" seen on the edge of this digital image is present in the original negative.
