Description
Heintz & Kaufman Gammatron Type 354 amplifier tube in original box, serial number 2256, with sales slip and product sheet. Shipped from Heintz and Kaufman to Carrington H. Stone in August 1936. According to original product sheet (see attached), the Type 354 can be used as an audio amplifier or radio frequency amplifier. It is described as a "medium power, general purpose triode, outstanding for its excellent workmanship, superior construction and long lasting dependability." "There are no elements enclosed in the tube that are not essential to its operation. There are no insulators that in the past have given trouble due to their release of occluded gases during periods of over-load, thus causing the tube to become soft. Likewise there is a minimum of metal parts that may possibly cause the tube to become 'gassy' due to their occluded gases during over-load." "The plate lead is taken out the top of the tube while the grid lead is brought out through the base. This arrangement gives a maximum of insulation and also keeps the grid-plate capacity down to a low value. Both the plate and the grid structures are fabricated of Tantalum. The plate is supplied with six large radiating fins and is rigidly mounted from the top of the glass bulb. The large radiating area combined with a permanently clear glass bulk permits the plate to radiate abnormally large amounts of power when its small size is considered. During the exhaust process the plate is required to dissipate over 1200 watts...."
