Verona Jemmott Burks was born in Belize, Central America, in 1951. When she was still a young girl, in 1958, Verona and her family immigrated to the United States in the hopes of finding increased economic opportunities. The family settled in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles and later moved further south. Growing up in Los Angeles, Verona retained strong ties to the Belizean community and later became the CEO of the nonprofit organization Consortium for Belizean Development.
Musicians perform onstage during the Day at the Park festival presented by the Concerned Belizean Association (CBA) at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, September 1996. The yearly festival is attended by 15, 000 to 20,000 people and celebrates the culture, music, and food of Belize. The event is held in September to celebrate two of Belize's national holidays. St. George's Caye Day on September 10th commemorates the British victory over the Spanish in a battle in 1793, which lead to the formation of British Honduras. Belize Independence Day celebrates British Honduras gaining independence from Great Britain on September 21, 1981.
