Description
Photograph of the first and second page of a letter written on February 26, 1888, by Henry Chapman Ford to General M. G. Vallejo regarding mission pictures and drawings by Edward Vischer of the San Rafael Mission. Transcription reads: "Santa Barbara, February 26th, 1888. Hon[orable] G. Vellejo [sic]. Dear sir, When I was in New York engaged in making the etchings of the missions of California, I wrote you asking if you could inform me if there was any picture or drawing of the San Rafael Mission now in existance, and that I was in possession of paintings and drawings or all the others and only lacked that of the San Rafael. You answered that you were then bound by your promise to a lady who was making a series of paintings of the missions, not to let any one else have any of your materials. That was in 1883! Some of your friends now suggest that I now write to you again hoping you may by this time be able to furnish me with the information I seek. I visited the town of San Rafael about 10 years ago but [...] was nothing left of the mission and I could gain but little information about it. About 3 years before, while in San Francisco, I [...] a set of photographs of all (or as I recalled nearly all) the missions ... [for page 2, see CHS-8483]". Transcription reads: "taken from drawings made by Mr. Vischer. Could you tell me if Mr. Vischer made drawings of the San Rafael and San Francisco Solano and if so where I can obtain them or at least make copies of them. If I am not able to see a drawing of the San Rafael, would you be willing to give me a verbal description of the building and the minor structures connected with it. I shall be very grateful for any assistance at your disposal and will be glad to reciprocate the favor in any manner you may suggest. I regret exceedingly that I was not able to see you when you were last in Santa Barbara: Having the highest respect for your distinguished services rendered out state in its early history and hoping I may recieve a favorable reply I am yours very truly, Henry Chapman Ford".
