Description
The Ben Whitman Memorial Cancer Foundation dinner in the Embassy Room of the Ambassador Hotel April 12, 1950. Seen here are noted attorney Jerry Giesler, who chairmaned the affair, as he introduced Mrs. Benny Whitman, widow, to the 600 guests assembled to pay tribute to the memory of the deceased boxing referee. Standing on the left is Robert J. Gans, president of Mount Sinai Hospital and Clinic, who sponsored the dinner. Mrs. Buddy Baer, known as May Mann, columnist, emceed the affair. Scores of referees and sports enthusiasts attended. The Foundation was instituted for the purpose of establishing a diagnostic cancer clinic in Los Angeles for the benefit of needy sick.
