Description
Navy Department photograph of Lee de Forest, assistants, and Navy pilots, and Navy blimp at Akron, Ohio, during de Forest's early experiments with radio telephony September 27, 1917. Identification on back of photo: "Navy Dept. Picture made Akron, Ohio, Sept. 27, 1917 during Dr. Lee de Forest's early experiments with radio telephony. We flew him high and low, backwards and forwards, for days. Identity or most of the personnel is of no interest, but here are some: In middle cock-pit--R. A. D. Preston, Goodyear Instructor, In rear cock-pit --Dr. de Forest, on ground--Lt. Jimmy Laveneder, USN (communications) in white uniform. Back of him, just head showing, Easterly, one or Nayv's good radio officers, killed in Shenandoah crash in Ohio. Fifth man over to right, Charlie Little, Killed in 2-R-2 crash over Hall, England. Three more over, white hatted sailor, Heronimus, another Navy communications expert, back with carrier pigeons. Civilian in straw hat assisting Dr. de Forest." Stamped with the seal of "Committee on Public Information-Washington." 9/27/17.
