Photograph of the exterior of the David Gordon Memorial Hospital, Livingstonia, Malawi. Livingstonia was founded in 1894 by missionaries from the Free Church of Scotland, the hospital was later established in 1910. The hospital is a red brick building which was characteristic of Livingstonia buildings. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
