Description
Photograph of horses attached to a winding apparatus at the construction of the Mount Lowe Railway, ca.1900. At center, six horses are shown on a cliff edge in groups of two, pulling the spokes of a wooden wheel in order to turn it. This apparatus apparently hoisted freight. Men, including one on the back of an eighth horse, can also be seen on the cliff. The railway was a project of Professor Thaddeus Lowe in the Moutains of Altadena.
