Market Basket was founded with one small store in Pasadena in 1930. Eventually, the chain operated fifty-six stores in the Los Angeles area by 1963, when it became affiliated with Kroger Company. Photograph caption dated March 29, 1962 reads "Valley civic leaders join in formal groundbreaking for the new Market Basket supermarket to be built on a site located on the corner of Ventura Blvd. and Eureka Dr., Studio City. From left are Jack T. Elliott, president of the North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce; Lawrence E. Kagan, president of Monarch Investment Co.; Albert J. Watson and Morris R. Brown, vice presidents of Market Basket; actress Verna Felton, honorary mayor of North Hollywood, and Neal D. Ramsey, president of Market Basket. The 31,000 square-foot market is scheduled for opening by early fall of this year."
