Description
One of Alexandre Lefebvre's velocipedes built in France, c. 1843. Hand carved body, seat, pedals, and handle bar. Wooden wheels with iron tires and wooden spokes 3/4" wide. Goode head carving extends in front from body frame. Seat hinged to lift up. No chain. Pedals attach to a mechanism; wheel rotates by pumping pedals, rather than being pushed in a circle. Spokes of lead wheel supported by twisted wire.
