Description
Ellen Redding McNeil was born in Nicasio, as was her mother, Ellen Murray Redding. Ellen tells the story of the 560-acre Redding Ranch. She describes the town of Nicasio and its square, and locates and identifies the old stores, the hotel, and houses. She also tells about her early schooling, classmates and life on a dairy ranch. Her daughter, Martha, joins in the reminiscences. Ellen was a school teacher and taught at the one-room school house on the Burdell Ranch where she traveled 5 miles each day by horseback From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
