Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Sona Avedian was born in 1942 and came alone to Los Angeles in 1968 from Aleppo, Syria. She was married six months later and lived in Hollywood. She eventually earned a pharmacy degree. She was affiliated with Holy Cross Armenian Church and the Hamazkayin Armenian Relief Society. Her father migrated from Syria in 1971 at the age of 63 and opened a sandwich shop in L.A. Her mother worked in the garment industry. Sona had two sons: one attended UCLA and the other Claremont Pomona College. Wedding portrait of Sona Avedian's grandparents taken in Aleppo, Syria on December 5, 1909. The bride's dress was handmade by her sister, who later returned to Western Armenia and died in the genocide.
