Photograph caption dated December 26, 1959 reads, "He Made It First - Johnny Wellcome, a massive 223-pounder, became the first player in Monroe High history to make the all-city, nailing down a second team tackle berth on the 1958 Helms array." Wellcome was selected for the 1959 Helms All - City football squad.
