Photograph was used as a basis for a drawing by Mel Lester depicting runner Steve Matthews of Los Angeles Valley College. The drawing was published in an article dated May 13, 1961 and provides small tidbits about the runner. The title of the illustration is "Steve Matthews Valley Colleges' brilliant record breaker." Tidbits read, "Against LongBeach [sic], in a dual meet, Steve ran all day...competing in the mile, two mile, and ran a 440 leg on the relay!! Total: 3 3/4 miles." "Steve has a 1:54.6 time in the 880, a 4:17.6 time in the mile, which is better than the record of 4:20.2" "Matthews, a real competitor, has a 9:36.9 time in the two-mile event, compared to the record 9:36.7 set in 1959."
