A view of the Carroll Canal in Venice. Various canal-front houses and apartment buildings are visible on the left side and in the background; some of them decorated with Christmas lights, although the photo was taken in mid-July. Notice the different styles of palm trees along the pathway. Abbott Kinney's original canals were dug in 1904. Most of them were filled in by 1929 to make way for the age of the automobile; those that survived became the neighborhoods favored by beatniks and artists in the 1960s. In 1994, Los Angeles refurbished the six remaining canals and now, as time passes, the smaller homes are being replaced by larger modern homes. Photograph dated July 17, 2003.
