Description
Photograph of a birdseye view of the sinking bascule bridge "Old Basky" and the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim drawbridge in front of it. "Two attempts have failed to halt sinking "Old Basky" (foreground). The Commodore Heim vertical opening bridge, alongside, may have to be scrapped, likewise" -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated, "January 22, 1960". "Subsidence Perils Harbor Landmark. San Pedro, Jan. 21 -- Time and subsidence may cause the downfall of the Los Angeles Harbor's famous landmarks -- the old bascule bridge which connects Terminal Island with the mainland. The bridge, which for years has groaned under the weight of millions of tons of freight in trains and trucks and countless automobiles carrying workers across Cerritos Channel, may soon have to be scrapped because of its age, plus its constant settling into the mud of San Pedro's man-made harbor. Two attempts have been made in the past 10 years to halt bridge's sinking -- at a cost of $981,351. But these raisings [sic], according to Bernard J. Caughlin, general manager of the Harbor Dept., cannot be continued because of the structure's age" -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated, "January 22, 1960". Streetscape.
