Description
A wide variety of English coat styles for men are shown in this illustration for the Gentleman's Magazine of September 1855. The entire party stands against a garden wall on which there are two neoclassical urns with rose bushes; tall trees form the background. The first man on the left wears a dark blue knee-length frock coat over brown and black vertically striped trousers. Like all of the gentlemen he wears a high-collared white shirt and dark cravat. He wears yellow gloves, black heeled shoes, and a black top hat. He holds a walking stick in his right hand and a cigar in his left. He wears a mustache with waxed ends. The second man from the left wears a loose-fitting dark overcoat and dark gray trousers with a line of black circles running down the sides. He wears yellow gloves, black heeled shoes, black top hat and carries a walking stick. He has mutton chop whiskers. The third man wears a riding outfit of white waistcoat and breeches, tall black leather boots with spurs, a red belted double-breasted jacket. He has gray gloves, and a black billed cap, and wears mutton chop whiskers and a waxed mustache. He carries a riding crop in one hand and a thin cigar in the other. The fourth man wears a hunting outfit of white waistcoat, a white shirt with a blue pattern, a red cravat, and gray trousers with tan leather gaiters buckled over his knees, shins, and shoes. He wears a thigh-length dark gray and black checked coat with breast and hip pocket flaps. He wears a low crowned brown felt or leather hat and wears a shoulder bag, probably a game bag, at his hip, strapped across his chest on a wide brown leather strap. He carries a shot gun over his shoulder. He wears mutton chop whiskers and a waxed mustache. His black and white hunting dog looks up at him, waiting for a signal. The fifth man wears a dark gray frock coat with cuffs and notched lapels over blue trousers. He wears black heeled shoes, a black top hat, tan gloves and carries a walking stick. Next to him is an adolescent boy wearing more formal clothing. A white pleated shirt, purple cravat, white waistcoat, powder blue trousers, and a black tailcoat would be suitable for dinner. He wears yellow gloves, white stockings, and low black shoes with small bows. His hair is parted and is styled into face-framing curls. The last man on the right wears gray trousers flecked with black, perhaps of tweed or wool. He wears the same loose-fitting overcoat as the second man but this time we are shown the back view. He wears yellow gloves, black heeled shoes, a black top hat and carries a walking stick. He wears mutton chop whiskers and a waxed mustache.
