Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 Hank Gathers (left) and Bo Kimble. High school buddies from Philadelphia, the two originally played for USC. After transferring to Loyola Marymount University, they flourished under former Lakers coach Paul Westhead's high-scoring, run-and-gun system. In 1988-89, Gathers was the nation's leading scorer and rebounder. The next season, as Gathers was running upcourt after dunking during a West Coast Conference tournament game, he collapsed and died from heart failure. Kimble then led under-manned LMU to three wins in the NCAA tourney before the Lions lost to eventual national champ UNLV. Kimble honored Gathers' memory by shooting free throws with his left hand. Photo dated: Apri 29, 1986.
