Description
This imposing residence was built in 1902 on Alvarado Row, Stanford University, at Jane Lathrop Stanford's behest for the Rev.R. Heber Newton of New York, the new pastor of Stanford's Memorial Church. The demanding Newton lasted barely five months, and he was fired for being unresponsive to student needs. At the time Elliott took this photograph, it was occupied by either Phi Gamma Delta (1906-13) or Phi Kappa Sigma (after 1915) fraternities. It is currently Hammarskjold House, an international theme student residence, addressed at 553 Mayfield Avenue. The house was expanded over the years, and was significantly renovated in 1994.
