This reactor was part of the Sodium Reactor Experiment, a nuclear power plant built by Atomics International of North American Aviation at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, in the Santa Susana Mountains. The reactor was active from 1957 to 1964. Photograph caption dated Janurary 16, 1957 reads, " Tight fit for reactor component. Last phase of installing of 75-ton shield atop Sodium Reactor Experiment is illustrated above. Nuclear power plant is built at Canoga Park's Atomic International as part of Atomic Energy Commission's program to develop economical power for atomic energy. Top of shield fits flush with floor level."
