Description
Robert A. Mills sits in a wheelchair and is surrounded by two military men, a nurse and other hospital personnel. Underneath the photograph is an excerpt about Robert A. Mills that reads "Robert A. Mills, a veteran of the Civil War, resided with his family in Mill Valley for several years in the twenties. He celebrated the hundredth anniversary of this birth, March 27, 1931, in the U.S. Government hospital in San Diego. In his young years he resided in Springfield, Ill., where he was a business neighbor of Abraham Lincoln, whom he knew quite well. The sculptor, J.E. Kelley of New York obtained explicit information in regard to Lincoln from Mr. Mills and as a return favor, sent a copy of his bas relief "Washington at Valley Forge", which adorns the corner stone of the sub-treasury building in New York City. Mr. Mills in turn gave the copy to the Mill Valley Public Library and it hangs in the library's board room as of 1946."
