The document contains both dated and undated entries with details about travel schedules, expenses, and names of travel companions as well as brief references to contemporary and historical places and events in Egypt, Spain, Italy, France, Great Britain. Also included are verbs and common phrases in French and Spanish. On some pages, the writing has blurred or been smudged. The label on the front of the notebook is in German, identifying the book sellers as J. Mayr and A. Fessler, Vienna. Notes begin both at the front and back of the diary, ending approximately in the middle of the book.
