Description
Photograph of first electric railway car, running from Maple Street along Pico, 1887. At center, a large covered railway car holding several passengers can be seen. The car is composed of a large, square compartment on the left and an open passenger compartment on the right. On the side of the square compartment, two small windows and an open doorway are visible. To the left, the silhouette of a figure stands behind a closed window. Below, two large wheels with holes along the inside of their rims are visible. To the right, several passengers sit along seven groups of benches. To the far right, a single man is seen standing near the rear of the car. Above the passengers, a small canopy supported by several columns provides shelter. Below the platform, two small wheels are visible.
Description on the back of the photograph reads: "Photograph of first electric railway in Los Angeles. This photograph was taken by Arthur W. Kinney in 1887. Mr. Kinney came to Los Angeles in 1882, went to the Los Angeles High School, was President of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce in 1913, President of the Kinney Iron Works in Los Angeles, and died in Los Angeles May 7, 1927".
