Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated September 2, 1950 partially reads, "The liquid slap-slap of waves under the sturdy bow of a 27-foot power boat is hardly a sound associated with the land-locked, mountain-rimmed San Fernando Valley. Yet to the ears of Arthur Hirschy, 55, it is a daily re-reminder of a job to be done. The vessel is the 'J.B.,' and she rides the waters of the Chatsworth Reservoir in the West Valley. Hirschy is skipper of this Valley 'Navy,' although the title is not mentioned in his records with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. His is officially listed as caretaker of the reservoir and has held the post since 1944. He lives with his wife and son in a neat cottage overlooking the peaceful waters of the big project." Photograph caption reads, "In land-bound Valley, patrol boat is unexpected sight, even out of water. Here the 'J.B.,' hauled out of reservoir, gets good scraping and new coat of marine paint."; See image #00136650 for additional photo in this series.
