Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. Wilt Chamberlain slams one home. The first of L.A.'s dominant centers, Chamberlain ended a decade of heart-break in 1972 by leading the Lakers to their first NBA title. A high-school track star who later became an avid beach volleyball player, Chamberlain was, as the Herald-Examiner's Mel Durslag put it, "the Matterhorn with muscles." He died in 1999.
