Description
Born in Virginia on 24 November 1813, Dr. Benjamin Headen grew up in Kentucky and attended Worthington Medical College in Ohio. In 1852 he moved his practice to California, settling on a tract of 60 acres in Santa Clara. Despite some difficulty he was able to cultivate this land and grow cereals and various fruits. In March 1853 Headen was elected to the Board of Trustees to the struggling University of the Pacific. He served there as Secretary of the Board and Treasurer, working many years to develop the institution. He died on 28 August 1875. Illustration from "Pen Pictures From the 'Garden of the World'"
