The press review provides the major news items related to Japanese American segregation reported by Western news sources for the week of September 1, 1943. It focuses on reports and editorials from the Dies committee that are critical of the War Relocation Authority. It also includes items on military service, repatriation, legal actions, center administration, education, community enterprises and employment.
The collection contains material used by Carey McWilliams in writing the book, Prejudice: Japanese Americans, symbol of racial intolerance (Little, Brown, 1944). It includes U.S. War Relocation Authority records, confidential reports, bibliographies, clippings and compilations of articles, legal papers, correspondence between McWilliams and Japanese American evacuees, relocation camp newspapers and other publications, two copies of his book, and five copies of the 1994 videocassette (40 min.), Something Strong Within.
